Cheap Knife Steel, Decoded: What D2, 14C28N and 8Cr Actually Get You Under $50
Spend twenty minutes on any knife forum and you’ll notice something: the arguments almost never end up being about the handle scales, the pocket clip, or even the lock. They end up being about steel. That’s because on a sub-$50 folder, the blade steel is the one component that dictates how the knife feels three months into daily carry — whether it still bites into cardboard, whether it’s grown a haze of rust from your sweat, and whether you can bring it back to hair-shaving sharp on a Sunday afternoon or you’re fighting it on the stones for an hour.
The good news is that the budget end of the market has quietly turned into the most interesting place to shop. A decade ago, under $50 meant a mushy 8Cr blade that dulled if you looked at it wrong. Today the same money buys genuinely capable steels that would have been premium in 2015. But the spec sheets are still a minefield of alphanumeric soup, and manufacturers count on you not knowing the difference. This is the field manual for reading that soup — what the common budget steels actually do, and how to match one to the way you carry.

The three things steel actually trades against
Before any specific steel name matters, you need the mental model. Every knife steel is a compromise between three properties that fundamentally fight each other, and no steel — at any price — wins all three. Understanding the triangle means you stop asking “what’s the best steel” and start asking “best at what.”
Edge retention is how long the blade stays sharp under use. It’s driven largely by carbide content and hardness — the hard particles suspended in the steel that do the microscopic cutting. More carbide, longer edge life, but also a harder steel to sharpen and one more prone to chipping.
Toughness is resistance to chipping and cracking — the ability to take lateral stress, prying, and the occasional accidental staple without the edge crumbling. Tougher steels are usually softer and lose their edge faster, but they fail gracefully instead of catastrophically.
Corrosion resistance is how well the steel shrugs off rust from humidity, sweat, food acids, and salt. This is driven by free chromium in the matrix. Here’s the cruel twist: chromium that’s locked up in carbides doesn’t fight rust. So some of the hardest, best-edge-holding budget steels are also the ones most likely to develop patina and spots if you neglect them.

D2: the semi-stainless workhorse that punches up
D2 is the steel that made budget knives interesting. It’s an old tool steel — originally a die steel, not designed for blades at all — with a high carbon and chromium content that gives it excellent edge retention for the price. On a well-run heat treat it holds a working edge far longer than anything that used to live at this price point. The Ontario RAT II in D2 is the classic reference: a couple of quarters over $30, and it will slice cardboard all day long between sharpenings.
The catch is written into the name — D2 is only semi-stainless. Its chromium is largely tied up in carbides, so it can and will spot-rust if you carry it sweaty against your body in a humid climate and never wipe it down. It’s also a bear to sharpen once it does go dull; the same carbides that hold the edge resist your stones. And because it’s relatively hard, the edge is more brittle — abuse it as a pry bar and you’ll chip it.

14C28N and Nitro-V: the balanced, rust-proof all-rounders
If D2 sits in the “holds an edge but babysit it” corner, Sandvik’s 14C28N sits dead center of the triangle — and for most people that’s exactly where you want to be. It’s a fine-grained Scandinavian stainless originally developed with Kershaw’s input, and it does everything reasonably well: genuinely good corrosion resistance, respectable edge retention, excellent toughness, and — crucially — it’s easy to sharpen. You can take a dull 14C28N edge back to shaving sharp on a basic stone in a few minutes.
Kershaw has used it across the line for years; the Leek is the poster child. Nitro-V is a very close American cousin — 14C28N’s composition with a touch of nitrogen and vanadium added, which nudges corrosion resistance and edge stability up slightly. You’ll find Nitro-V on a lot of the newer CIVIVI and Sencut budget folders, and honestly, in daily pocket use most people can’t tell the two apart.
This is the steel to recommend to someone buying their first “real” EDC knife. It doesn’t do any one thing spectacularly, but it never punishes you, never surprises you with rust, and never fights you on the stones. For a knife you’ll actually carry and use rather than baby, that reliability is worth more than a marginally longer edge.

AR-RPM9 and the powder-metallurgy surprise
Here’s the genuinely new thing at the budget end. AR-RPM9 is a powder-metallurgy stainless steel that started showing up on Artisan, CJRB and some CIVIVI models a couple of years ago — and powder metallurgy used to be strictly a premium-steel manufacturing process. The powder process produces a finer, more uniform carbide structure, which in plain English means a steel that punches above its composition: better edge stability, cleaner sharpening, and good corrosion resistance, all in a blade you’ll find on knives well under $50.
It’s not a wonder steel — its raw edge retention is roughly in the same ballpark as good 14C28N, not a leap past it. What it represents is more important than the numbers: the manufacturing technology that separated “budget” from “premium” is trickling down. A CJRB folder in AR-RPM9 gives you a fine-grained, easy-to-maintain edge and modern flipper action for the price of a couple of pizzas. Five years ago that combination simply didn’t exist.

8Cr13MoV and AUS-8: the honest budget baseline
Don’t sneer at 8Cr13MoV. It’s the Chinese stainless that’s been the default budget steel for over a decade, and its reputation as “cheap junk” is unfair — it’s just ordinary. It sharpens extremely easily (a real advantage for beginners still learning the stones), resists rust well, and takes a screaming-sharp edge. What it doesn’t do is hold that edge; it goes dull faster than anything else here. AUS-8, its Japanese equivalent, behaves almost identically — slightly tougher, similar retention.
The thing is, easy sharpening partly cancels out weak retention. If you strop your knife every few days as part of a routine, 8Cr is a perfectly pleasant steel to live with — you’ll never let it get dull enough to matter. Cold Steel built a whole reputation on hard-use knives in AUS-8, and the Tuff Lite is a case study in a cheap steel serving a well-designed blade honestly. The problem is only when a maker charges premium money for it. Under $30, in a knife you’ll touch up regularly, it’s a fair deal.
The classic carbon steels: Opinel and the patina crowd
A category worth its own mention, because it breaks the stainless mold entirely. Opinel’s non-stainless XC90 carbon steel (and Sandvik 12C27 on their stainless models) represents an older philosophy: maximum ease of sharpening and a genuinely keen edge, at the cost of rust resistance. Carbon-steel Opinels will develop a grey patina — and among enthusiasts that patina is a feature, a self-limiting oxide layer that actually protects the blade once it forms. They take an absurdly fine edge for the money.
This is not the steel for someone who wants a set-and-forget pocket tool. But if you find the maintenance ritual satisfying rather than annoying — a wipe after cutting fruit, a light oil now and then — a carbon-steel blade is one of the most rewarding things under $20 in the entire knife world.
Heat treat: the spec you can’t read off the box
Here’s the uncomfortable truth that undercuts every steel chart online: the steel name only tells you the potential. What determines whether a blade reaches that potential is heat treatment — the precise hardening and tempering the factory performs. A well-heat-treated 8Cr can outperform a botched D2. This is measured in Rockwell hardness (HRC), and while budget makers rarely publish it, a good EDC target is roughly 58–61 HRC for most of these steels.
You can’t measure this at the counter, which is exactly why brand reputation matters more at the budget end than the premium end. Kershaw, CIVIVI, Sencut, CJRB, Ontario, and Cold Steel have earned trust because their heat treats are consistent. A no-name blade listing an impressive steel with no brand behind it is a gamble — the steel might be real and the heat treat garbage. Buy the maker’s track record as much as the alloy.
Matching steel to how you actually carry
Strip away the metallurgy and the decision comes down to your habits. If you cut a lot and sharpen rarely — think warehouse work, constant boxes — lean toward D2 or a powder steel and accept a little maintenance. If you want one knife that never gives you grief, that you’ll carry against sweaty skin in summer and forget to clean, 14C28N or Nitro-V is the answer nine times out of ten. If you’re new and still learning to sharpen, 8Cr or AUS-8 is forgiving and cheap enough to practice on. And if the ritual of maintenance appeals to you rather than repels you, a carbon-steel Opinel is a genuinely different pleasure.
The real headline is that there are no bad choices left under $50 — only mismatched ones. The budget-steel floor has risen so far that the wrong knife for you is now almost always a knife whose strengths don’t line up with your habits, not a knife that’s simply bad. Read the triangle, be honest about how you carry, and buy the steel that forgives your specific brand of neglect.
