Spyderco Para 3 Review: Honest Carry Notes After a Month

The Spyderco Para 3 is a compressed version of the legendary Para Military 2, with a 2.92-inch CPM-S45VN drop-point blade, the Spyderco compression lock, and G10 handle scales. The Para 3 platform launched in 2016 and the steel has been progressively upgraded — this is the current 2024-on model with S45VN.

If you’ve owned a Spyderco before and want their best work in a pocket-friendly size, this is the one. The Para 3 is for the carrier who wants premium steel, an iconic lock, and that distinctive Spyderco aesthetic — and is willing to carry a slightly heavier knife than the Bugout to get all of it. It’s the editor’s-choice knife for the carrier who already knows what compression lock means.

What we liked

  • The compression lock is a genuine engineering pleasure. One-handed close without putting your finger in the blade path. After a month with one, the AXIS lock still feels good but the compression lock feels right.
  • G10 scales feel like the price tag. Textured, grippy, and they don’t flex. This is what the Bugout’s handle should feel like.
  • S45VN is a meaningful upgrade over the older S30V. Edge retention is better and corrosion resistance is noticeably improved if you do food prep with your knife.

What we didn’t

  • It’s almost twice the weight of the Bugout (3.4 vs 1.85 oz). For a smaller blade, that’s a real choice you’re making for the lock and the steel.
  • The classic Spyderco hole-in-the-blade aesthetic is divisive. Some people love it, some people think it looks tactical.
  • The four-position pocket clip is great in theory but the screws are tiny and easy to strip if you reposition often.

Verdict

The Para 3 is the editor’s-choice premium pocket knife for May 2026 if your priorities are lock geometry, steel quality, and handle feel — and you’re okay carrying an extra 1.5 oz over a Bugout to get them. We carry both, depending on the day. If you have to pick one, the Para 3 feels like the more knife. Just be honest with yourself about the weight.
